Union Minister G Kishan Reddy Reaffirms Commitment to Singareni Collieries Company

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, has assured that the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) will remain a public sector undertaking (PSU), dispelling any concerns regarding its potential privatisation. Speaking at a press conference today, Reddy emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of SCCL and its workforce.

“We will take care of Singareni with full responsibility,” stated Reddy. “I will conduct a special review on the subject of Singareni and engage in discussions with all relevant officials to ensure its continued success and stability.”

Reddy’s comments come in response to growing speculation about the future of SCCL. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Telangana, during which the Prime Minister categorically stated that Singareni would not be privatised and would continue to operate as a PSU.

“Prime Minister Modi has made it clear that Singareni is not going to be privatised,” Reddy reiterated. “We firmly believe that Singareni should remain a public sector entity, and we urge the Telangana government to share this stance and not pursue any privatisation efforts.”

SCCL, one of India’s oldest coal mining companies, plays a crucial role in the energy sector and is a significant employer in the region. The reaffirmation of its PSU status provides much-needed assurance to its employees and stakeholders, who have been concerned about the implications of potential privatisation.

The Union Minister’s assurance reflects the central government’s broader policy of retaining strategic public sector enterprises under government control to ensure their role in national development and public welfare.

“We are not in favour of its privatisation,” Reddy concluded. “Our focus is on enhancing the efficiency and productivity of Singareni while maintaining its public sector character. We are committed to its growth and to addressing any challenges it may face.”

The announcement has been met with relief and support from various quarters, including trade unions and employees of SCCL, who have long advocated for the company to remain a PSU. The government’s commitment to SCCL’s future as a public sector company underscores its strategic importance and the role it plays in India’s energy security and regional development.
