UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy embarked on a crucial diplomatic visit to India, marking a pivotal moment in UK-India relations under the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Lammy’s visit underscores the Labour government’s commitment to resetting and expanding the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with India.
In his meetings with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lammy reiterated the UK’s keen interest in deepening ties across various fronts, including economic cooperation, technological advancement, and global security.
“I am delighted to be in India to reinforce our commitment to a strong and dynamic UK-India relationship,” Lammy remarked ahead of his engagements. “Our discussions have been productive, focusing on enhancing bilateral trade through a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement and collaborating on key strategic initiatives.”
During his visit, Lammy emphasized the importance of fostering a sustainable partnership that aligns with shared interests in green transition technologies, economic security, and global stability. These discussions are pivotal as both nations look to leverage their respective strengths for mutual benefit.
The UK Foreign Secretary also underscored the significant role of the ‘Living Bridge’ – the vibrant Indian diaspora in the UK, which contributes immensely to both countries’ social and economic landscapes. “The Indian diaspora in the UK represents a bridge of friendship and understanding between our nations,” Lammy acknowledged, highlighting their role in enhancing cultural exchange and economic prosperity.
In addition to his meetings with government officials, Lammy engaged with climate and business leaders to explore avenues for collaborative action on climate change and sustainable development goals. His visit coincides with efforts to align UK-India cooperation with global priorities, including the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos, where Lammy will continue to advocate for strengthened economic partnerships and new initiatives in climate resilience and public health.
As the UK charts a course for deeper engagement with India, Lammy’s visit signals a strategic push towards forging a resilient and enduring partnership that harnesses innovation, promotes inclusive growth, and addresses shared global challenges.
