Hyderabad Metro Rail Aims for 100% Solar Power and Carbon Neutrality by 2040

Hyderabad, India – L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL), the company behind the construction and operation of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project, has announced ambitious plans to meet 100% of its energy requirements through solar power. The company is also committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and water neutrality by 2035.

The announcement was made by K.V.B. Reddy, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of L&TMRHL. He stated that the company is actively pursuing carbon credit monetisation through the ‘Global Carbon Council’, thereby transforming environmental responsibility into a financially viable model.

In addition to these initiatives, L&TMRHL aims to achieve platinum certification for all its stations from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This certification is a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Since the commissioning of the HMR project, L&TMRHL has made significant contributions towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In the fiscal year 2022-23 alone, the company has saved an estimated 88 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to the carbon sequestration provided by over 88 million trees.

Reddy also highlighted the environmental benefits of using the Metro for commuting. He pointed out that a 30 km journey on the Metro emits 97% less CO2 than the same journey made by a car and 98% less than a bus. This significantly reduces an individual’s carbon footprint, making the Metro a more sustainable choice for daily commuting.

With these initiatives, L&TMRHL is leading the way in sustainable urban transport, demonstrating how environmental responsibility can be integrated with business operations.
