Hyderabad: BJP leader NV Subhash has criticized Rahul Gandhi’s recent call to enact the “Rohith Vemula Act,” arguing that the Congress leader has misunderstood the facts surrounding the case of Rohith Vemula.
“Being the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi should understand the system,” Subhash said, referring to Gandhi’s letter calling for a law in Vemula’s name. The BJP leader pointed out that the Telangana government and police had already clarified in writing that Rohith Vemula was not a member of the Scheduled Castes (SC) community, and therefore, the claim of him being a Dalit was false.
“The Congress party, which is ruling the state in Telangana, the government and the police have very clearly given in writing that Rohith Vemula did not belong to the SC community. He was not a Dalit,” Subhash added.
While not opposing the idea of an act to address issues related to Dalit welfare, Subhash emphasized that the nomenclature of the act should not be associated with Vemula, as the state’s official stance contradicted the claim.
“We are not against the Act, but the nomenclature of Rohith Vemula, bringing the person whom the state government has mentioned, that he was not a Dalit, is not acceptable,” he concluded.
