Hyderabad, Telangana: BJP spokesperson Prakash Reddy on Sunday strongly criticised AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi over his recent statement suggesting that hijab-clad women could one day become the Prime Minister of India.
Reddy accused Owaisi of attempting to revive communal tensions and accused him of politicising religion for electoral gains. “Once again, Asaduddin Owaisi, MP of Hyderabad, stated that hijab-clad women will one day become the Prime Minister. Once again, he wants to revive communal tensions, and he wants to do politics only on a communal basis,” Reddy said.
He further clarified that under the Indian Constitution, anyone can become the Prime Minister regardless of religion, caste, creed, or race. “As per the Indian Constitution, anyone can become the Prime Minister of this country irrespective of religion, caste, creed, or race,” he added.
However, Reddy asserted that those with fundamentalist religious outlooks will never assume the country’s highest executive office, implying a distinction between constitutional rights and extremist ideologies.
The BJP spokesperson’s remarks come amid ongoing political debates around religious identity and secularism. Owaisi has not yet responded to the criticism.
The exchange highlights the sensitive nature of religion in Indian politics and the fine line leaders tread between inclusivity and communal rhetoric.
