In a concerted effort to ensure uniformity in the recognition and registration of Sikh marriages across India, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) convened a crucial video conference meeting today. Chaired by the Chairman of NCM, the meeting saw the participation of representatives from 18 States and Union Territories (UTs) to discuss the implementation status of the Anand Marriage Act.
The Anand Marriage Act, enacted in 1909, holds significant importance for the Sikh community as it provides a legal framework for the registration of their marriages. However, despite its long existence, the Act has not been uniformly implemented across all states and UTs, leading to disparities in recognition and registration procedures.
During the virtual meeting, several states, including Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Meghalaya, reported successful implementation of the Act within their jurisdictions. They highlighted the positive impact of uniform implementation on ensuring the rights and legal protection of Sikh couples.
However, concerns were raised over the delayed implementation in certain states and UTs. Acknowledging these challenges, the Chairman of NCM stressed the urgent need for all states and UTs to expedite the implementation process. He emphasized that the timely implementation of the Act is crucial in safeguarding the rights of the Sikh community and ensuring equal treatment under the law.
In response to the Chairman’s call, representatives from the remaining states and UTs pledged to fast-track the implementation of the Anand Marriage Act within the next two months. They expressed their commitment to working closely with the NCM to overcome administrative hurdles and ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act.
The NCM further assured its support in providing necessary guidance and assistance to states and UTs facing logistical challenges in implementing the Act. The Commission underscored its role in monitoring the progress and offering technical expertise to facilitate a smooth and efficient registration process for Sikh marriages nationwide.
Leaders from various Sikh organizations welcomed the Commission’s initiative and emphasized the importance of uniform implementation of the Anand Marriage Act. They highlighted that such measures are essential in upholding the cultural and religious rights of the Sikh community and promoting social inclusivity across the country.
As the meeting concluded, the NCM reiterated its commitment to working closely with states and UTs to ensure the effective implementation of the Anand Marriage Act. The Commission emphasized that this collective effort will contribute towards strengthening the legal framework for Sikh marriages and advancing the principles of equality and justice.
